MUNCIE, Ind. - Central Michigan senior quarterback Dan LeFevour's milestone night led the Chippewas to a milestone 35-3 victory over Ball State.
Dan LeFevour
became the Mid-American Conference's all-time leader in passing yards, completing 25-of-28 throws for 344 yards, and had a hand in all five of CMU's touchdowns in a 35-3 win at
Ball State
Wednesday night.
The Chippewas improved to 9-2 overall, including 7-0 in the MAC for just the second time in program history. It is CMU's first nine-win regular season since 1994, and the Chippewas moved within a game of their third MAC Championship Game appearance in the past four seasons.
Central Michigan
can clinch a spot in the conference title game with either an
Ohio
victory over
Northern Illinois
on Saturday, or with a victory over NIU at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in the regular season finale on Nov. 27.
LeFevour was nearly flawless, completing 14-of-17 first-half passes before hitting on all 11 pass attempts in the second half. He finished the night with exactly 12,000 career passing yards, topping Byron Leftwich's conference-record mark of 11,903.
LeFevour threw touchdown passes of 10 yards to
Bryan Anderson
, 82 yards to
Antonio Brown
and 3 and 11 yards to
David Blackburn
. He also ran 1 yard for a score in the second quarter.
It was the 82-yard throw to Brown late in the first half that proved to be the biggest play of the night.
Ian McGarvey's field goal with 1:38 left in the half drew Ball State within 14-3, and CMU was facing third-and-11 from its own 18-yard line as the clock ticked under a minute. LeFevour was flushed from the pocket and rolled hard to his right toward the CMU bench. Without breaking stride he threw to a crossing Brown, who made the catch and out-sprinted the Ball State defense down the sideline to the end zone.
After punting to open the second half, LeFevour and Blackburn hooked up for touchdown passes on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter.
Anderson's 10-yard touchdown catch capped CMU's opening possession and extended to 51 his streak of consecutive games played with a reception. He is now tied with Taurean Henderson (
Texas Tech
) and Michael Larkin (
Miami
, Ohio) for the NCAA all-division record.
While the Chippewa offense was rolling up 512 total yards, the CMU defense was limiting Ball State to 231 total yards, 59 of which came on the Cardinals' lone scoring drive in the second quarter. CMU forced Ball State into four three-and-outs, two turnovers on downs, an interception and a fumble in its 10 total possessions.
CMU's regular season finale against Northern Illinois will kick off at 1 p.m. at Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Friday, Nov. 27. CMU is offering several promotional ticket packages for the contest.
