Staley Agrees to 49ers Contract Extension
Staley has played every offensive snap during his first two seasons in San Francisco. He started all 16 games at right tackle as a rookie in 2007 before transitioning to left tackle for the 2008 season.
The first Chippewa ever selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, Staley was the 28th overall selection in the 2007 draft. The 49ers negotiated a draft-day trade with New England that allowed them to move up in the draft to select Staley.
Staley was a four-year letterman and three-year starter for Central Michigan from 2003-06. A tight end as a freshman, Staley started 11 games at right tackle in 2004. He started the final 25 games of his career at left tackle and was an All-Mid-American Conference first team selection as a senior in 2006.
Staley was a co-captain for the 2006 CMU team that finished 10-4 overall with wins in the MAC Championship Game and Motor City Bowl.
Staley capped his collegiate career by competing in the 2007 Senior Bowl.
San Francisco opens the 2009 season at defending NFC champion Arizona on Sept. 13. The 49ers will make two primetime national television appearances in 2009: Thursday, Nov. 12 against Chicago on NFL Network and Monday, Dec. 14 against Arizona on Monday Night Football on ESPN.
