Holland (Mich.) Christian quarterback A.J. Westendorp verbally committed to Central Michigan…
Westendorp Visiting CMU
The muscular 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal-caller compiled record-setting numbers in the air (completed 226 of 325 passes for 3,600 yards and 40 touchdowns) and on the ground (rushed 176 times for 1,251 yards and 25 TDs) in leading the Maroons to an undefeated season.
A consensus first team All-Stater who was recently selected as the No. 34 prospect in Michigan by the Detroit Free Press, Westendorp's only offers to date are North Dakota State, Grand Valley and Saginaw Valley. That could change this weekend though, as Westendorp is taking an official visit to Central Michigan.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the academic side, to sit down with the coaches and to meet some of the players," Westendorp said. "The situation is, if (Tallahassee Leon High School quarterback) Austin Dantin commits to CMU then I won't have a scholarship. If he goes elsewhere, then I have a scholarship."
Westendorp compares his game to that of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and CMU's own Dan LeFevour.
"I don't run a 4.5 40, I'm a 4.7 guy," Westendorp said. "The biggest thing for me is getting the ball in the end zone. I've committed myself to excellence in football."
Westendorp, who will be hosted this weekend by CMU freshman quarterback Ryan Radcliff, said this is not the first time he's set foot on the CMU campus. He attended CMU's junior day during the spring football game last April and he attended a one-day camp in June.
Westendorp said if the Chippewas do offer a scholarship this weekend, he will strongly consider becoming a part of the CMU program, but he is also considering Division II power Grand Valley. The opportunity to play at the Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision) level would fulfill a dream for Westendorp though and might be too hard to pass up.
"I've talked to (former Holland Christian teammate and current Michigan State quarterback) Kirk Cousins and he thinks CMU would be a great program for me with their spread offense," Westendorp said. "The system is perfect for me and the coaches are great people. Central is a great program with the guys they're bringing in and hopefully, me too."
