MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University senior linebacker Doug Kress of Lapeer (Mich.) West High School has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

A physical education major with a 3.43 grade-point average, Doug Kress made a team-high 11 tackles in CMU's 18-7 win over Ball State last Saturday. He led a defense that limited Ball State, the top scoring and passing offense in the MAC, to season lows of seven points and 160 passing yards.

The win was CMU's fourth in five games and kept them alone in first place in the MAC West Division.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Central Michigan, following a 31-14 win over Bowling Green Thursday night, is 5-3 overall, 5-0 in the MAC, and alone in first place in the West Division. The Chippewas last started 5-0 in conference play in 1990. The Chippewas are off the next two Saturdays, returning to action on Nov. 4 at Temple.
