CMU Junior Pro Day Results

MOUNT PLEASANT - With the 2006 NFL Draft still two months away, the Central Michigan University football players eligible for the 2007 draft showcased their wares on March 1.

Thirteen seniors-to-be on the Central Michigan University roster worked out at the Indoor Athletic Complex as part of the Chippewas' Junior Pro Day and, as expected, a couple of familiar names stole the show.

Offensive tackle Joe Staley checked in at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, then was timed at 4.70 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Staley's 40-yard time was faster than the times posted by the 42 offensive linemen who ran at the NFL Scouting Combine last week. He was also clocked faster than nine of 21 quarterbacks who ran at the combine.

Staley, who also performed 28 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press, is entering his second season as the Chippewas' starting left tackle. Fresh off a prep career that saw him set school records on the track in the 200m (21.9), 4x100m relay (42.5) and 4x200m relay (1:27), Staley enrolled at CMU in 2003 as a 230-pound tight end. He caught 11 passes for 130 yards and a score as a freshman, then moved to right tackle during spring drills. He started all 11 games at right tackle in 2004 and all 11 contests at left tackle in 2005.

Daniel Bazuin, the 2005 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, weighed in at 267 pounds. He lifted 225 pounds 25 times on the bench press and was timed at 4.68 seconds in the 40. Bazuin equaled a conference record with 16 sacks in 2005. He also recorded 26.5 tackles for loss; both his sack and tackle for loss totals established new CMU single-season records. Bazuin also holds CMU career records for sacks (25) and tackles for loss (48.5).

An honorable mention All-America selection by SI.com, Bazuin led the nation in tackles for loss and ranked second in sacks in 2005.

All-MAC second team linebacker Isaac Brown was timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash during the session. That time was faster than 15 of the 18 linebackers who ran the sprint at the NFL Combine. Brown, who weighed in at 201 pounds, performed 19 repetitions on the bench press and posted a 33-1/2 inch vertical leap.

Brown was second among his teammates with 11.5 tackles for loss in 2005 and tied for third with 73 total tackles.

Other notable performances from the day included 300-pound center Drew Mormino running the 40-yard dash in 5.2 seconds and receiver Obed Cetoute recording a 38-1/2 inch vertical leap.

A total of 13 CMU student-athletes worked out during the session: Bazuin, Brown, Cetoute, Dave Condeni, Pacino Horne, Craig Knudson, Doug Kress, Damien Linson, Mormino, Mike Ogle, Terrance Robinson, Staley and Leython Williams.

CMU will open the 2006 season at home on Aug. 31, hosting Boston College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. ESPN2 will televise the contest live to a national audience.
