CMU Football Announces 2006 Recruiting Class

Brian Kelly

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head football coach Brian Kelly has announced the signing of 26 high school student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.

Fourteen of the incoming recruits are projected to line up on the defensive side of the ball, including 12 likely defensive backs. Eleven are ticketed for offensive duty, including trios of running backs, wide receivers and offensive linemen. A kicker is also part of the class of signees.

Eight different states are represented in the class, with 10 recruits hailing from Michigan and nine from Florida. The group also includes CMU's first high school recruit from the state of California since 2000.

Kelly identified four primary goals the program accomplished during the recruiting process.

"First and foremost, it is important for us to recruit our state," Kelly said. "I thought we did a tremendous job within the state of Michigan in finding those student-athletes who are the best fit for our program. Secondly, we had a specific need in the secondary that we needed to address. With signing a total of 12 defensive backs, we have gone a long way toward solidifying what had been a vulnerable area.

"Third, we looked for linemen who can move their feet and are athletic," he continued. "These kids play with the type of demeanor that we want our players to bring to every practice and every game. And fourth, we looked for skill. We wanted players who we considered to be playmakers, and we have identified some individuals who we think fit into that class."

Kelly also lauded the efforts of his coaching staff over the past several months during the recruiting process.

"We had to overcome the adversity of having two coaches leave during the recruiting process, so everybody on the staff had to pick up the slack," Kelly said. "We had a lot of coaches in areas that are not normal for them, but I thought the commitment of our staff throughout the process was outstanding."

Central Michigan finished 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference in 2005. It marked the Chippewas' first winning season since 1998.
