Smith Attends MSU Junior Day

Ithaca (Mich.) junior quarterback Travis Smith did not have too far to go for Michigan State's junior day, and he found the short trip to be well worth it.

Travis Smith is one of the top junior quarterbacks in the Midwest. He finished last season with 2,309 yards through the air, 23 touchdowns and just three interceptions with 969 more on the ground and 25 rushing touchdowns.

While he does not have any offers yet, he is hearing from a number of BCS programs including Michigan State, who he went to junior day at on Sunday.

"It was great. First we got there, went and checked out the recruiting lounge and the players lounge. We sat in the team room and they showed us a highlight video. We went and talked to our recruiting coaches and then we broke up by position. They took us on a tour, took us to the equipment room, showed us everything and then we went to the basketball game."

Smith had a good chance to spend time with the coaches and not only get to know them better, but also get a feel for where he stands.

"I went and talked to Coach Staten for 10-15 minutes, then went to my position coach and talked to Coach Warner for 10-15 minutes. Mainly they were just talking about what MSU was like and what I would get out of it if I went there. They ran us through who they're recruiting, the kids they've offered in my class, and there weren't a lot of guys that they offered and they said they were going after one or two quarterbacks in my class."

Smith is fielding a lot of interest and has several invites to other schools.

"I don't have anything planned, maybe Duke. I'm talking to them a lot and they said to come down whenever I have a chance, and maybe I'll get down to Nebraska, Minnesota, and some other Big Ten schools."

And through all that, he expects to continue to hear from MSU.

"They just said they'll keep in contact with me a lot. Coach Staten said he will come and watch me play basketball and talk to me there a little bit. He's supposed to come to school and watch me throw. Coach Dantonio is coming to the school some time, but he doesn't know exactly when, but he'll come out and talk to Coach Hessbrook."
