Warren De La Salle senior wide receiver Jack Wangler has the size (6'2, 190-lbs) schools look for, along with route-running skills, good hands, and good grades in the classroom. As a result, he currently has several options on the table.
"Right now, I'm still talking to Michigan. I'm waiting on Harvard, and I should know after the 11th or 12th. It's depending on my ACT score, but I'm next in line. Minnesota, Western Michigan have started to show interest. The Western coach just got replaced and they're looking to fill their recruiting class. Valpo offered. Dayton is looking heavily too."
The opportunity at Michigan is an interesting one, as Wangler's father played there and the class of 2013 commitment list is full of players he played with at De La Salle and in the 7 on 7 circuit.
"Right now, [Michigan] told me I have a preferred walk-on spot. They'd want me to come in in June and start with Shane [Morris], Khalid [Hill], those guys. At this point, they know who I am, I've been to enough camps, and they know I can play, it's just a matter of coming to camp as a preferred walk-on. I've been to enough Michigan games, but I haven't been on an actual visit. It's something they want me to do in January."
Minnesota, the other Big Ten school in the mix, has just begun to show interest, but the feedback has been positive.
"I'm good friends with Berkley Edwards and his dad talked to the coaches for me. I've sent tapes, and they've come in and seen me, so they seem pretty interested."
If all these options were to materialize, Wangler would have a potentially difficult decision to make as he balances academics, football, and the other aspects of choosing a college. He does not mind though, as he is simply looking for the best fit.
"At this point, I just want to be able to enjoy having options. To be honest, I have no clue where I want to end up. There is still time for coaches and players to make moves, and it's a matter of where I find myself best suited. I'll probably make a decision around National Signing Day. I want to explore my options fully without jumping the gun, but the Michigan and Valpo situations very intriguing. I jut want to find a fit that's right for me."
