Burgess Lands First Offer

Burgess Lands First Offer

It's certainly not been an easy journey, but Shaker Heights (OH) senior wide receiver Derrick Burgess is seeing his hard work start to pay off. After missing his junior season due to an injury, Burgess has impressed as a senior and landed his first offer.

Senior wide receiver Derrick Burgess is an extremely talented football player, but the Shaker Heights (OH) athlete is just now starting to hit the recruiting radar.

Burgess, 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, played sparingly as a sophomore, missed his junior season to injury, but responded with a big senior season. He landed his first offer recently.

"I was offered by Youngstown State and I'm thrilled to have that first offer," Burgess stated. "I was also offered by Ohio Dominican (NAIA) and that is great also. Youngstown State plays great football, and the coaches said they like my speed and size."

"I'm just looking for a chance," he added. "I know there isn't much film out there on me, so teams would be taking a chance with me. Now that schools are seeing my grades are good, that's opened things up for me. Miami of Ohio is close to offering and I like that school a lot."

"I'm playing really well, but I know I can be better," Burgess said. "It kills me that I missed last season, because I was starting to really come on, and the accident set me back. Only in the last few weeks have I started to play like I know I can."

EVALUATION: There are plenty of players on BCS rosters today that do not possess the raw skills of Derrick Burgess. He is a long-armed, quick-twitch, athlete that can play either side of the ball. I like him best as a wide receiver, where he can use his body and his jumping ability to cause matchup problems for the defense.
